The end of term is coming. Your landlord wants the room cleared, your flight home is booked, and you’ve just counted sixteen boxes, a bike, and a guitar you can’t fit in the overhead locker. Student storage exists exactly for this.
We’ve been collecting from student halls and houses across the North West for over 20 years. This guide covers everything students at Manchester, Salford, and Liverpool universities need to know — how the process works, what it costs, and how to book.
Do You Actually Need Student Storage?
Not every student does. But if any of these apply to you, storage makes more sense than the alternatives:
- You’re an international student travelling home for the summer and can’t take everything with you
- You live too far away to drive a carload of stuff back
- You’re moving to a different house or flat next year and don’t want to pay for a man-and-van twice
- You’re taking a gap year or doing a year abroad
- Your halls contract ends before your new tenancy starts, leaving you with nowhere to put things
Leaving your belongings in an empty student house is the option most students regret. Empty properties attract break-ins, and your contents insurance may not cover items in an unoccupied property. Secure storage costs less than replacing a laptop.
How Student Storage Works at Manchester Self Storage
The process has four simple steps. It takes just a phone call or a few clicks to arrange, making storage straightforward and stress-free for students.
1. We deliver your packing kit
We bring boxes (57 x 47 x 36 cm each) and packing materials to your halls or house. You tell us how many you need, and we deliver them to your door.
2. You pack at your own pace
There’s no rush on packing day. Fill the boxes, seal them, and label them if you like. We collect once you’re ready.
3. We collect and store
We come to your address, load your boxes, and take them to our secure facility. Your items go into your own locked unit — not shared racking, not a shared container.
4. We redeliver when you’re back
Return delivery to the same city is included in the price. If you’re moving to a new address next year, we can redeliver there, too. Moving to a different city costs a little more — call us, and we’ll provide a quote.
Student Storage in Manchester
Manchester is home to over 100,000 students. The University of Manchester alone has more than 44,000 students, with around 14,500 from overseas — more international students than any UK university except UCL. Manchester Metropolitan University adds tens of thousands more, along with specialist institutions like the Royal Northern College of Music.
The Manchester Self Storage Company collects directly from student halls and re-delivers when the term starts, with return delivery to the same city included in the price.
We cover all major student areas, including:
- Fallowfield and Withington — the heartland of student Manchester, home to thousands of private rentals
- Rusholme and Moss Side — close to the UoM campus and heavily student-populated
- Oxford Road corridor — university buildings, MMU campuses, and purpose-built student accommodation
- Hulme and Ardwick — increasingly popular for second and third-year students
Our depot is in Trafford Park, on Westinghouse Road, M17 1PY. It’s less than ten minutes from the city centre by car and straightforward to reach from any of the above areas.
Students at the University of Manchester, MMU, and the University of Salford can book a box collection from their accommodation, with no van hire required.
Student Storage in Salford
The University of Salford has around 25,000 students across three campuses: Peel Park, Frederick Road, and MediaCity in Salford Quays. Approximately 4,500 of those are international students, and the university does not guarantee on-campus accommodation for all students — many rent privately from their first year.
That matters for storage. A private tenancy often requires you to vacate for the summer, or at least clear your room, even if you’re returning in September. Professional storage is cheaper than paying rent on an empty room.
Salford’s student areas are compact and close to our Manchester depot. We collect from Salford Quays, Ordsall, Broughton, and across the central Salford postcode areas.
Most students finish their final trimester in early June, with graduation in July and term restarting in late September. Book early in May to secure a collection date around the last week of term, giving you peace of mind.
Student Storage in Liverpool
Manchester Self Storage Company also operates from a Liverpool depot on Trinity Road, meaning students studying on Merseyside receive the same door-to-door service as those in Manchester. Liverpool’s universities collectively draw tens of thousands of students, many of them international.
The five institutions we regularly collect from are:
- University of Liverpool (around 21,000 students)
- Liverpool John Moores University
- Liverpool Hope University
- Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine
- Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts
Liverpool is a magnet for international students. For those travelling back to mainland Europe, Asia, or further afield, taking three months’ worth of belongings on a flight simply isn’t practical. We store your items at our Liverpool depot, then redeliver to your accommodation when term starts.
The company’s Liverpool depot on Trinity Road serves students at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Hope, and the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.
We cover all major Liverpool student areas, including Smithdown Road, Kensington, Aigburth, and the city centre. If you’re not sure whether we collect from your postcode, call us on 0800 170 1260, and we’ll confirm.
What Can You Store?
Storage is priced by volume and duration, so you only pay for what you actually need.
Here’s a rough guide to what fits:
|
Storage need |
What it covers |
|
1–2 boxes |
Laptop, books, small electricals, winter clothes |
|
3–5 boxes |
Typical single room contents (no furniture) |
|
6–10 boxes |
Full room including bedding, kitchen items, and larger items |
|
Mobile self-storage unit |
Furniture, bikes, large items, alongside boxes |
Our standard boxes measure 57 x 47 x 36 cm and are sturdy enough for books, kitchenware, clothing, and electronics. Got something that won’t fit in a box — a guitar, a bike, a monitor? Call us. We’ll tell you the best option.
All items are held in your own dedicated, locked storage unit at the ground-floor level. Our facilities run digital CCTV and monitored alarm systems 24 hours a day. We do not use shared racking — your belongings stay in your unit, not mixed with other customers’ items.
How Much Does Student Storage Cost?
Price depends on two things: how much you’re storing and how long you need it for.
We quote per storage unit or per box, and we adjust the price to match what you actually have. You won’t be pushed into a unit size larger than you need.
A few things worth knowing before you book:
- NUS discounts are available. Ask when you call or enquire online, and we’ll apply the relevant discount to your quote.
- Return delivery in the same city is included. You’re not paying extra to get your stuff back.
- There are no hidden fees. The price you’re quoted covers collection, storage, and redelivery.
